Two tornadoes, described by experts as an almost unprecedented event for the island, struck the coastal town of Marsala in western Sicily on a recent Friday, injuring dozens of people and damaging buildings including a school, overturning cars and causing extensive damage in Marsala and nearby Petrosino, south of Trapani. Videos showed waterspouts approaching the town from the sea before making landfall. At least 11 people were taken to hospital after being struck by flying debris and shattered glass, and authorities are assessing further damage from what was called a powerful storm system that developed over the Mediterranean.
