Two tornadoes, described by experts as an almost unprecedented event for the Italian island, struck the coastal town of Marsala in western Sicily on a Friday, with waterspouts approaching from the Mediterranean before making landfall. The tornadoes caused severe damage in Marsala and nearby Petrosino, damaging buildings including a school, overturning cars, and injuring dozens of people. At least 11 people were taken to hospital after being struck by flying debris and shattered glass. Videos of the waterspouts and the aftermath circulated widely, showing extensive destruction across the western part of the island.
