A major magnitude 7.7 earthquake struck near Pitaloza Arriba, Panama, on October 15-16, 2026, followed by a series of significant aftershocks including magnitude 6.6, 6.1, 6.0, 5.8 and 4.5 events recorded near Río Grande, El Cacao and La Tronosa. GDACS classified at least one of the smaller shocks as a green alert, estimating around 220,000 people within 100 km of the affected area. No deaths, injuries or damage have yet been reported from the sequence, but the size of the mainshock and the repeated strong aftershocks mean continued monitoring for damage and tsunami potential in the region.
