Organizers of the Great American Rail-Trail project hope to connect more than 150 existing rail-trails, greenways and other paths spanning more than 3,700 miles across the United States, according to NPR reporting on October 17, 2026. The initiative includes progress in western Pennsylvania, West Virginia and Ohio, with planners working to create a comprehensive network of recreational pathways for bikers and other users.
