Dancing With the Stars pro Val Chmerkovskiy was suspended for one week after making a joke implying he nearly slapped judge Carrie Ann Inaba, referencing Will Smith's 2022 Oscars slap. BBC Studios said on October 17 that "the well-being of everyone" connected to the show is "non-negotiable" and called the post inappropriate. Chmerkovskiy addressed the suspension on Instagram, and his celebrity partner Jenna Dewan was paired with pro Alan Bersten for the show's October 20 Dedication Night. Fellow pro Harry Shum Jr. urged fans to remember the show "should be joyous" amid the online discourse surrounding the incident.
