Miami climbed to No. 1 in the AP Top 25 for the first time since 2002 and BYU rose to No. 2, its highest ranking since 1984, after an upset-filled weekend of college football. Miami survived two Hail Mary attempts by Florida State to win 43-35 in double overtime on October 17, a game in which Seminoles running back Ousmane Kromah suffered a season-ending ankle injury, while BYU upset then-No. 2 Notre Dame 28-24 on a final-play defensive stop, handing the Fighting Irish their first loss of the season. The Big 12 later admitted officials had erred in ending the BYU-Notre Dame game, saying Notre Dame should have had one more second on the clock for a final play. The results, among several upsets involving top-seven teams, scrambled the College Football Playoff picture heading into the committee's midseason evaluations.
