Iran's IRGC Navy said on October 20, 2026, that two non-compliant tankers caught fire and were halted after striking naval mines in a prohibited zone of the southern Strait of Hormuz, with one super tanker reportedly carrying more than two million barrels of crude oil exploding before catching fire. The Iranian Army's Navy separately said it had spotted a burning violating tanker in the same restricted corridor. The IRGC also claimed it downed a US drone and set two tankers ablaze near Hormuz, and IRNA reported a further MQ-9 drone shot down over the strait, as Iran has stepped up actions against commercial shipping and reconnaissance aircraft in the waterway in recent weeks amid continued hostilities with the United States and Israel.
