NASA's Perseverance rover surpassed Opportunity's 28.06-mile driving record on Mars, becoming the vehicle that has traveled farthest across another world, ScienceDaily reported on October 21, 2026. Perseverance achieved this historic milestone in just five and a half years, compared to nearly 15 years for Opportunity's record, aided by its advanced self-driving system. The rover is now exploring some of the oldest rocks in the solar system in search of evidence of ancient Martian life.
