Deep inside a high-altitude Chinese cave, scientists discovered a ghostly, eyeless freshwater snail that has evolved to survive entirely in darkness, marking the first recorded discovery of such a species in China, ScienceDaily reported on October 21, 2026. Named after a faceless mythical creature, the rare species is already in danger, with researchers finding only three living adults in the cave. The discovery adds to the growing catalog of unique troglomorphic species adapted to subterranean environments.
