A New Mexico judge ordered Meta to pay 25 billion dollars in penalties over more than 43 million violations of the state's unfair practices law tied to the Cambridge Analytica data privacy scandal. The ruling follows a September jury finding that Meta misled consumers about how it protected their data, and it marks the company's biggest legal setback of the year. Meta separately disclosed that it also paid 9.89 billion dollars toward a prior 17.1 billion dollar child safety settlement with US attorneys general reached in August, saying its operating income would have been 22.89 billion dollars without that payout.
