The Atari VCS, a Linux-based, AMD-powered retro console that suffered a decade of delays and name changes following its 2017 crowdfunding campaign, will be retired when its software store shuts down on February 1, 2027, according to an announcement in the Atari Club Discord server reported by Tom's Hardware. The closure marks the end of one of gaming's most troubled hardware launches, during which Atari repeatedly had to assure backers the console was not doomed. The VCS, designed with inspiration from the original Atari 2600 but without a cartridge slot, never achieved mainstream adoption.
