A team of South Korean researchers has proposed a new astronomical date for the night sky depicted in Vincent van Gogh's masterpiece The Starry Night, challenging the long-held assumption among art historians that the stars were a product of the artist's fantasy or that the scene was dated to June 1889. The researchers found that astronomical details such as the sliver crescent moon do not align with the previously accepted date, suggesting van Gogh may have based the painting on an actual night sky from a different time period.
