French police banned protests in parts of Paris on Thursday October 22 following some of the worst street unrest the country has seen in years, as authorities braced for further demonstrations. President Emmanuel Macron accused foreign leaders, in an apparent swipe at Donald Trump, of making "stupid" comments and exploiting the violence for political gain ahead of the US midterm elections. The restrictions extend earlier measures imposed after the unrest escalated, and the episode has fuelled a wider transatlantic war of words between Macron and Trump.
