The United Arab Emirates formally nominated veteran diplomat Lana Nusseibeh to succeed Antonio Guterres as UN secretary-general, a move that could break a deadlock after six inconclusive Security Council voting rounds. If chosen, Nusseibeh, who is of Palestinian heritage, would become the first woman and the first person of Palestinian descent to hold the post, and is seen as more likely to win US backing. Her candidacy drew immediate criticism over the UAE's foreign policy, including its support for Sudan's Rapid Support Forces and its positions on Israel, which critics say are inconsistent with the role.
