Researchers at Cambridge have developed a $10 optical sensor chip capable of laboratory-level precision in a form small enough to embed in wearable devices, according to findings published October 23, 2026. In tests, the sensor identified foods, plastics, and medicines with 100% accuracy and demonstrated the ability to monitor blood glucose, alcohol, and other health markers without invasive procedures. The low cost and miniaturized design could make advanced, non-invasive health monitoring widely accessible through consumer wearables, potentially expanding diagnostic capabilities beyond hospitals and specialized labs.
