On September 1, 1961, TWA Flight 529 crashed in a cornfield near Willowbrook, Illinois at 2:05 a.m., shortly after taking off from Chicago's Midway Airport as the final leg of a cross-country journey. The Lockheed Constellation L-049 propeller airliner pitched up and stalled after departure, unable to be brought back under control. A memorial now marks the site of the tragedy.
