A series of strong earthquakes, including two measured at magnitude 7.0 by the USGS, struck the Bonin Islands region of Japan in the early hours of October 25, 2026. GDACS also recorded related quakes of magnitude 6.5 and 4.8 in the same area, all at very large depths of roughly 490 to 500 kilometers. GDACS classified the events as "green" alerts, its lowest severity level, and reported no people affected within 100 kilometers of the epicenters due to the remote location and extreme depth of the quakes, which limits surface shaking despite their size.
