An Egyptian court convicted Cairo-based journalist Lina Attalah, co-founder and editor of Mada Masr, on Tuesday, October 27, 2026, and authorities ordered the independent news site closed. Amnesty International called the verdict a crushing blow to press freedom, and the Committee to Protect Journalists has ranked Egypt among the world's top jailers of journalists. Attalah was detained after the ruling.
