Researchers from Shedd Aquarium, Arkansas State University and the U.S. Geological Survey have described five new freshwater mussel species in southern U.S. rivers. Mongabay reported that the species were found after about 20 years of river surveys, with DNA revealing differences from shells that looked familiar. The discovery highlights how much biodiversity US rivers still conceal.
