On October 27, 1962, Soviet naval officer Vasily Arkhipov refused to authorize a nuclear torpedo launch from the submarine B-59 during the Cuban Missile Crisis. Good News Network marked the anniversary in its daily history feature. Arkhipov was one of three officers aboard the submarine, and his refusal reportedly stood down the other two, averting a launch that could have led to nuclear war. He is often called the man who saved the world.
