Jordan carried out airstrikes on Monday evening, October 27, against armed groups in southern Syria, in retaliation for a Friday attack on a Greek Orthodox church in Karak that killed nine people, according to a Jordanian air force statement. Syrian authorities said at least six people were killed in the strikes, and Syria's foreign ministry later condemned the attacks on Tuesday as an unacceptable breach of its airspace, saying seven people were killed, including three children and a woman. France 24 reported the differing tolls, with the Jordanian statement giving no casualty figure for the strikes and Syria's account rising from at least six to seven. Jordan said it regretted the civilian casualties. Amman has linked the church attack to militants operating across the border, and the exchange raises tensions along the Jordan-Syria frontier.
