The Census Bureau's Economic Indicators release put the U.S. rental vacancy rate at 7.6% in the third quarter of 2026. That was 0.5 percentage points higher than a year earlier. Compared with the third quarter of 2025, vacancy rates were higher in the Northeast and West, while the Midwest and South showed no statistically significant change.
