Macaques that had been sick or had watched others fall ill were less likely to eat a treat that looked contaminated with feces than primates that had not witnessed an outbreak. The monkeys did not know how the infection spreads, the Smithsonian Magazine reported. The result suggests that disease experience can shape hygiene-related avoidance behavior in primates, much as it does in humans.
