Artificial nest boxes are giving shelter and research opportunities to yellow-crested cockatoos in urban Hong Kong, Mongabay reported on October 28, 2026. The species is critically endangered, with fewer than 2,000 individuals left across its native range in eastern Indonesia and Timor-Leste. Hong Kong hosts roughly 200 wild birds, according to the report, and the nest boxes address a housing shortage for the parrots in the city.
