Senegal opened Africa's first Youth Olympic Games on October 28, 2026, with 2,700 young athletes competing in Dakar, Diamniadio and Saly. Deutsche Welle reported the Games bring pride and hope to the host continent. The Games have also drawn questions over cost, human rights and legacy, according to Deutsche Welle. The event is the first of its kind in Africa and is expected to run in several venues across the Senegalese capital region.
