Sir Patrick Stewart, the English actor best known as Captain Jean-Luc Picard and Professor Charles Xavier, died at his Los Angeles home on Wednesday, October 28, 2026, aged 86, after a brief battle with Alzheimer's disease and Lewy body dementia. His spokesperson Kelly Bush Novak announced the death on Thursday, October 29. Tributes came from William Shatner, Hugh Jackman, Kevin Feige, Seth MacFarlane, Jeri Ryan, George Takei and Paul Wesley, with Ian McKellen writing that Stewart was born and bred in Yorkshire and was a man to rely on, to admire and, in his case, love. Marvel confirmed his final film role will be in Avengers: Doomsday, his ninth outing as Xavier. Variety and Just Jared noted that in an interview months earlier he said he could not imagine retiring. Coverage also looked back at his career, from the stage to Star Trek, his Emmy and Golden Globe nominations, and his regrets over time away from his children.
