Residents of Pamarawan, a fishing village in the City of Malolos, Philippines, are using bamboo, shells and husks as natural defenses against floods, Mongabay reported on October 30, 2026. For years floodwater inundated village streets when the southwest monsoon, known locally as hagabat, pushed strong waves ashore, and typhoons made it worse. The nature-based approach offers a low-cost way for coastal communities to cope with rising flood risk.
