A University of Birmingham researcher built a miniature quantum universe using 24,000 ultracold atoms that repeatedly expands and contracts, mimicking the Big Bang and a possible Big Crunch. The experiment showed time could emerge from changes inside the system without an external clock. The work could help answer basic questions about what time is and where it comes from.
