Scientists have discovered a bacterial defense system that works in reverse of typical immune mechanisms, ScienceDaily reported on October 31, 2026. The system produces DNA to switch on a lethal toxin only after infection begins. The infected bacterium then destroys itself, which prevents the virus from multiplying and spreading to neighboring cells.
