OpenAI announced a pilot of its Grid Protectors Program at a planned data center in Effingham County, Georgia. The company says it can free up to 1,000 megawatts during extreme weather or emergencies, enough to power air conditioners in about 700,000 homes. The announcement comes as opposition to data centers grows across the United States over large projects that often proceed with little public input.
