Russia reclaimed its occupied Kursk borderlands about a year and a half ago, but many refugees still cannot go home. Ukraine invaded the region in early August 2024, and parts remained under Ukrainian control until the following spring. Meduza visited the region and reported that the border villages where some residents are trying to return are uninhabitable, and that some locals watch drone attacks like a show. The sources do not give refugee figures.
