Residents of Corvo island in the Portuguese Azores switch off public lighting during the last five nights of October each year to protect vulnerable seabird fledglings, with about 30,000 birds already saved. More than 400 residents take part, setting an example for the wider region, since artificial lights can disorient young birds on their first flights.
