A memorial at Lam Sin in southern Thailand commemorates suspected Communist Party of Thailand members who were executed by being burned in red petroleum barrels in the early 1970s. Atlas Obscura reported that the killings were part of a wider campaign from 1971 to 1973 to violently suppress the communist movement in areas deemed strategically sensitive. The memorial serves as a reminder of events that many people outside Thailand are unaware of.
