Atlas Obscura profiled the small religious shrines, called niċeċ, that are set into house walls and above doorways in Victoria, the capital of Gozo, Malta. The feature describes elaborate stone niches holding carved saints under Baroque canopies, alongside simpler painted figures behind glass. More than fifty of the shrines survive in the town, some more than three hundred years old. The shrines were built by householders rather than by the church, and some are still tended today, with a lamp lit at night beside a vase of plastic flowers.
