Democrats won control of both the U.S. House and Senate in the 2026 midterm elections on November 3, in what outlets described as a backlash against President Donald Trump. CNN called the Senate flip at 11:35 p.m. ET, projecting at least 51 seats. Notable results included James Talarico defeating Ken Paxton in Texas, Adam Hamilton ousting Roger Marshall in Kansas, Annie Andrews winning in South Carolina, and Chris Pappas becoming the first out gay man elected to the Senate in New Hampshire. Gina Hinojosa was projected as Texas governor, Xavier Becerra won California's governorship over Steve Hilton, and Keisha Lance Bottoms became the first Black woman elected governor in the U.S. by winning Georgia. Los Angeles' mayoral race between Karen Bass and Nithya Raman was tight in early returns. Trump said he would accept the results and work with Democrats, while Rolling Stone reported he was already deflecting blame for the Republican losses. Celebrities including The Chicks, Jennifer Lawrence and Tinashe weighed in around Election Day.
