Progressive Democrat Abdul El-Sayed won a Michigan Senate seat on Wednesday, November 4, 2026, and will become the first Muslim to serve in the US Senate when he takes office in January. Tehran Times reported his win, and Reuters reported that Egyptians hailed the result while Egyptian state media paid little notice. El-Sayed, born in Michigan to Egyptian immigrant parents, has spoken about his heritage and has called Egypt a military dictatorship. Tehran Times also reported that he said US tax dollars should not fund Israel's war.
