South Korea plans to expand the operations of its Cheonghae anti-piracy unit to waters closer to the Strait of Hormuz, the Defence Ministry said on November 5, 2026. The move follows pressure from US President Donald Trump for support for the war in Iran. The government will submit a motion to parliament to extend the unit's deployment to the Middle East, which is set to expire at the end of 2026, a ministry spokesperson said, confirming a Yonhap News Agency report. The plan has not yet been approved by parliament.
