Shas chair Arye Deri has sought to resign as party leader after the party lost five Knesset seats in the election, the Times of Israel reported. The party's Council of Torah Sages, which holds that Deri may not resign from the leadership, was postponed from meeting on the matter and was expected to meet this week to discuss the request. A source close to Deri told the Times of Israel the council is unlikely to allow him to step down at this time. Haaretz reported that Deri is considering resigning from the Knesset while retaining control of the party, and that he has largely been out of public view. The unresolved outcome leaves his position in the party uncertain.
