The Times of Israel reported that the IDF identified Mohammed Deif and other top Hamas commanders entering tunnels on the night before the October 7 attack, now cleared for publication. Other anomalous signs seen between October 6 and 7 included activity at rocket-launching tunnel shafts and in Hamas's anti-tank missile array. The Jerusalem Post reported that the IDF's pursuit of Deif distracted it from warning signs that Hamas was planning the attack, noting that many viewed Deif as more dangerous than Gaza chief Yahya Sinwar.
