SLAC scientists have confirmed a third type of magnetism called altermagnetism, using specialized X-rays to uncover a unique magnetic signature. For nearly 90 years, scientists believed magnetism fell into just two categories. The researchers say altermagnets combine stability with an efficient ability to carry information, which could help overcome limits in today's electronics and enable faster computers.
