Democrats are projected to regain control of the US House of Representatives in the November 3 midterm elections, putting Hakeem Jeffries in position to become the first Black speaker. The party also won significant Senate races in South Carolina and North Carolina, a setback for President Donald Trump's Republicans. The Kyiv Independent reported that Ukrainian-born Republican Rep. Victoria Spartz lost her seat to a Democrat. In April 2025 Spartz had said Ukraine should cede territory to Russia and called for Zelensky's resignation. The shift in Congress could affect future US policy on Ukraine aid.
