NASA's Swift space observatory fell back to Earth and burned up in the atmosphere, according to Deutsche Welle on 5 November 2026, ending a mission of more than two decades. An earlier attempt to boost the telescope's decaying orbit had failed, leaving its descent unavoidable. Swift had operated for more than twenty years as an orbital observatory, and its loss closes a long-running chapter of space astronomy.
