Atlas Obscura published a feature on Gods House Tower in Southampton, England, tracing its history. The oldest part of the building, originally known as God's House Gate, was built in 1189 near God's House Hospital. The gate was built to give access to the Platform Quay and guard the town from attack by sea. The building has held many uses over several hundred years.
