Paraguayan authorities placed President Santiago Peña under house arrest on Friday after the Senate removed him from office over a banking scandal. The collapse of Ueno Bank left nearly three million customers unable to access their savings, and France 24 reported that the banking crisis locked nearly half of Paraguayans out of their money. France 24 also reported that Peña offered his resignation, but lawmakers pressed ahead with impeachment, and senators unanimously voted to strip him of office and political immunity. Peña denies any wrongdoing. His successor, Pedro Alliana, has pledged to compensate those affected, though the scale of the losses and the timing of repayments remain unclear.
